The Portrait in Red Chalk

Red chalk was first used for drawing on paper in late-15th century Italy. In 2012 the Scottish National Gallery explored this versatile and beautiful drawing medium in an exhibit titled, Red Chalk: Raphael to Ramsay. It showcased drawings by artists, such as Peter Paul Rubens, Salvator Rosa, Jean-Antoine Watteau, Francois Boucher and David Allan.  Ms Hash’s red chalk drawings are executed in sanguine colored pastel.
